ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – Four kids were ejected from a vehicle after an apparent joyride went very, very wrong.
According to the Commerce City Police Department, the driver was a 14-year-old with a 12-year-old and two 16-year-olds as passengers. Police told sister station CBS Denver that it appeared the boys took the car without their parents’ knowledge, though the incident is still under investigation.
Police say the kids were heading westbound on 88th Street when the 14-year-old driver hit a guardrail and swerved into oncoming traffic, where they collided with a minivan. The car then ended up in a creek, as its four young occupants were thrown into the water.
“This car with four juvenile males in it was traveling at what we believe was likely a high rate of speed,” the police department said.
Numerous agencies responded to the scene, including South Adams County Fire, Brighton Fire Rescue, City of Thornton Fire Department, Platte Valley Ambulance Service, Commerce City Police Department, and Federal Heights Fire Department.
“We would also like to thank the off-duty Denver firefighter and Northglenn Police Department officer who helped in the search and removal of the patients from the water,” South Adams Fire said.
The two women in the minivan only suffered minor injuries. The boys’ injuries, however, were more serious, with the driver currently in critical condition. All involved in what police referred to as “this preventable crash” were transported to the hospital.
“Slow down. Seat belts. Don’t drive if you aren’t licensed to do so. There’s a reason we want you to abide by law, and it’s not just because we may ticket you. This. This is exactly why,” Commerce City Police Department said.
