[06-17-24] 8 Injured After Amazon Truck, SUV Crash, Catch Fire in Eastern Colorado

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – An Amazon truck and an SUV both caught fire after colliding east of the Denver metro early Monday morning.

According to State Patrol, the Amazon truck was heading west on I-70 when the driver suddenly crashed into guardrail and swerved across the median, hitting an eastbound SUV head-on. Both vehicles burst into flames after colliding.

State Patrol was called to the scene just after 2 a.m. The 911 caller told troopers the vehicles were both engulfed by fire.

Eight people in the SUV were transported to the hospital, including one who suffered serious injuries. The trucker was not hurt.

All eastbound lanes of I-70 were shut down at Byers (exit 316) for more than seven hours. As of 10:22 a.m., CDOT is no longer showing the closure.

Troopers are still investigating what caused the driver in the semi to hit the guardrail. 11 News is told the Amazon truck was hauling a load at the time of the wreck.

The wreck site is about 26 miles from Aurora.

DENVER TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS

Colorado’s roads, by nature, are considered far more dangerous than most of the country. The mountains offer challenges to trucks that require slowing techniques that prevent smoking brakes.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has built 13 runaway truck ramps on mountains, mostly on I-70. The most used is on the descent from the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels to Silverthorne.

There have been continuous calls to improve the state’s trucking routes, amongst bigger calls for improved driver standards.
