[12-04-24] Motorcycle Rider Killed in Crash With Semitrailer in Commerce City

A 22-year-old motorcycle rider was killed in a crash with a semitrailer in east Commerce City on Monday, according to police officials.

The crash occurred around noon on Tower Road between Peña Boulevard and 96th Avenue, Commerce City Police Department officials said in a post on Facebook.

No other injuries were reported, department spokesperson Joanna Small said.

Speed and intoxication are not believed to be factors in the crash, but the case is still under investigation, she said.

Tower Road was closed in both directions for several hours after the crash but was expected to reopen Monday afternoon, Small said.

The man killed in the crash will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle accidents are seldom a minor occurrence. In fact, they are some of the most dangerous types of road accidents. They usually occur at high speeds and result in severe injury or death.

Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable and prone to be ejected from their motorcycle in an accident. According to the NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Guide, motorcyclists are four times more likely to sustain injuries in an accident than other vehicle operators and 29 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle collision than passengers in a car or truck. Common injuries from motorcycle collisions include serious head injuries, back injuries, and broken bones.

Year after year, motorcyclists continue to overrepresent crash fatalities. Motorcycle injuries and accident statistics serve as a sobering reminder for all drivers to use caution. Here is a look at some statistics reflecting motorcycle accidents in the US and Colorado. Based on the information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Colorado’s Motorcycle Operator Safety Training Program (MOST), and KKTV:

  • The US had 5,458 motorcycle fatalities in 2020, a 9% increase from 2019 and the highest number of motorcycle fatalities ever recorded.
  • 2020 was also a record year for motorcycle fatalities in Colorado
  • Colorado observed:
    • 72 motorcycle-related deaths in January-June 2020
    • 59 motorcycle-related deaths in January-June 2021
  • Motorcycle-related crash fatalities account for 17% of all motor vehicle crash casualties in Colorado.
  • 80% of motorcycle crashes result in severe injuries
  • Head-on and rear-end collisions are the most common motorcycle crashes, accounting for 74% of all motorcycle crashes.
  • 63% of motorcycle accident victims were not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred
  • In 2019, Colorado observed 103 motorcyclist fatalities
    • 92 were male
    • 11 were female
    • 93 were motorcycle operators
    • 10 were motorcycle passengers

While they only make up 3% of registered vehicles in Colorado, they account for 23% of traffic fatalities in 2020. Motorcyclists accounted for 137 out of 622 traffic fatalities in Colorado in 2020.

Many different contributing factors can lead to motorcycle accidents. The most common causes are driving under the influence, speeding, lack of proper training, failure to wear a helmet, and driver negligence.
