[10-24-22] Multiple Crashes on Interstate 70 Leaves 2 Dead, 2 Hospitalized

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. ( KDVR ) – A single-vehicle rollover led to a second crash early Saturday morning that left two people dead, two more in the hospital and a portion of Interstate 70 temporarily closed.

Colorado State Patrol received reports around 3:10 a.m. regarding the crashes that happened on I-70 at East Colfax Avenue and Frontage Road.

Initial crash on Interstate 70

Colorado State Patrol told FOX31 that the initial crash involved a 2006 Infiniti that had four occupants. It was traveling in the eastbound direction on I-70 near East Colfax Avenue early Saturday morning when the driver lost control and rolled the vehicle.

CSP said that the driver was thrown from the vehicle during the rollover.

According to preliminary reports from the investigation, passengers got out of the vehicle after the car came to a rest.

Secondary crash on Interstate 70

After the passengers had exited the vehicle, a semitruck traveling down I-70 in the eastbound direction approached the scene of the initial crash and attempted to avoid it.

While trying to avoid the rolled-over vehicle, the semitruck struck two people who were outside of the Infiniti at the time.

CSP confirmed that as a result of this, two people died and two others were transported to a nearby hospital.

According to officials with CSP, it is unclear at this point if the two who were declared dead passed away at the scene of the crash, or at the hospital. Additionally, the extent of the injuries of the two who were taken to the hospital is not known at this point either.

The driver was not injured during this crash.

DENVER TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS

Colorado’s roads, by nature, are considered far more dangerous than most of the country. The mountains offer challenges to trucks that require slowing techniques that prevent smoking brakes.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has built 13 runaway truck ramps on mountains, mostly on I-70. The most used is on the descent from the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels to Silverthorne.

There have been continuous calls to improve the state’s trucking routes, amongst bigger calls for improved driver standards.
