[11-12-24] Southbound I-25 Reopens After 3 Semitrailers Crash

DENVER (KDVR) — Roadways around Colorado were still impacted by a multi-day snowstorm that buried the Eastern Plains and dumped over half a winter’s worth of snow in Denver.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office detoured southbound traffic onto Happy Canyon Boulevard from Interstate 25 on Sunday morning and let motorists back onto the highway at Founders/Meadow Parkway.

The agency said a crash caused the closure. There were no details on injuries and when the roadway was expected to reopen, but the Colorado State Patrol told FOX31 that three semitrailers were involved, and two rolled over. Another car was also involved.

However, at about 8 a.m., Colorado Department of Transportation roadway cameras showed cars loaded onto tow trucks and no ambulances on scene.

Interstate 70 eastbound from Strasburg was also closed between the Bennett Rest Area and I-70 Business North to about milepost 310. The Colorado Department of Transportation was recommending motorists use Exit 306 (Colfax Eastbound), to detour.

The eastbound interstate was closed due to traffic concerns on Sunday morning, and the Colorado State Patrol confirmed that a single-vehicle crash had killed the car’s single occupant. The crash was reported at about 3:45 a.m. on Sunday. The highway was heavily impacted by the snowstorm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

DENVER TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS

Colorado’s roads, by nature, are considered far more dangerous than most of the country. The mountains offer challenges to trucks that require slowing techniques that prevent smoking brakes.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has built 13 runaway truck ramps on mountains, mostly on I-70. The most used is on the descent from the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels to Silverthorne.

There have been continuous calls to improve the state’s trucking routes, amongst bigger calls for improved driver standards.
